WL Rating

The subtitle of this book best communicates its content: 50 places to surf before you die. But, depending upon your age, skill level, and spot order, you may not make it past one or two spots, i.e. maybe save Teahupo’o for last. In The Pilgrimage former Tracks Magazine editor Sean Doherty has compiled a list of 50 world class, idyllic surf breaks from Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Southern Asia, the North and South Pacific, Africa and the Indian Ocean, Europe and Great Britain, North and South America. Some of the spots are well known while others are slightly more obscure, but all of them are classic. Because the book is from and by an Australian, it reads more like the ideal Australian pilgrimage, with a disproportionate share of Australian spots. Also, the book would have been even better with another couple photos for each spot. Even so, this is a great, easy to browse coffee table book, and an ideal gift for any surfer. For me, this is a WL Essential. (March 2010)
