WL Rating

Living in Northern California and not being a stranger on the larger days at Ocean Beach, I occasionally get to thinking that I could surf Maverick’s, the big wave surf spot outside of Half Moon Bay. Well, after reading Inside Maverick’s I can now officially say that it ain’t gonna happen.  Edited by Bruce Jenkins (North Shore Chronicles) and big wave surfer Grant Washburn, Inside Maverick’s is one of the best books I’ve read on big wave surfing. It provides an unvarnished, realistic look at what it takes to put yourself into an extreme situation. While the words themselves are captivating, Doug Acton’s excellent photos bring it all to life.  In the book you’ll find essays from surfing luminaries like Evan Slater, Peter Mel, Kenny Collins, Mark Renneker, and others along with a smattering of pithy quotes from folks like Richard Schmidt, Jeff Clark, Laird Hamilton, and Ken Bradshaw.  All of the content put together provides tremendous insight into the wave, the take-off, the wipeout, the reef, the rocks, and all the other nasty bits that make this wave so formidable. This is definitely a book to own and a great gift for any surfer. It’s also a WL Essential.  (June 2010)
