I haven’t read that many books that are geared to surfers of the gentler sex (and truth be told I still can’t remember how I came across this one), but after spending some time with Louise Searle’s book The Surf Girl Handbook, I’m glad that I did. Searle is the editor of SurfGirl Magazine, which is based in the warm water mecca of Cornwall in the UK. Fortunately for the reader, Searle opted to shoot her instructional photos in much warmer tropical climes. The book is well produced, providing a wide breadth of information for female surfers of any level. Newbies can learn about wave etiquette, what equipment to buy, wave mechanics 101, etc., while intermediate surfers will enjoy the instructions on how to pull off more advanced maneuvers. The book also provides some guidelines on how to eat and train to remain healthy and in peak condition for surfing. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised by Searle’s book and I think it would be a nice gift for the new or intermediate level surfer. By the way, a lot of the tips in the book would also be good for guys, but you didn’t hear that from me.  (November 2011)
