I was really excited to get California Trip after I read an article about the author’s journey to create the book. Unfortunately, it turned out that the article about the process of compiling the book was much more interesting than the book itself. Granted, a big part of the problem was my misguided view that the book chronicled a Nor-Cal to So-Cal surf odyssey. In fact, the book is more reminiscent of the A Day in the Life... series that highlights a wide variety of moments for a given geographical subject. Even so, Blair and his photographer Kathleen Goodwin do a good job capturing the variety of lifestyles that make up the California mosaic, however, the book really isn’t something that I’d classify as a pure water-book. If you are interested in seeing how diverse and rich the lifestyles are across California, then this is a good coffee table book to own. If, however, you have a penchant for something more ocean and surfing focused, then this isn’t the book for you.  (April 2009)
