My wife was lurking in a Japanese store in San Francisco’s Japantown when she came across this book. Being a most excellent spouse, she bought it for me on the spot, and I couldn’t be happier. I’ll say this right upfront: 75-85 Surfing Japan is not a book for everyone. I lived (and occasionally surfed) in Japan for five years so I was fascinated to flip through this book’s solid collection of photos. The book really has no text aside from the requisite photo credits, but it offers a breadth of photos of Japanese surfers at local Japanese breaks as well as a few exotic locales. Also included is the occasional famous guest in Japan, e.g. Buttons and Eddie, but for the most part this is a Japan-only deal. Surf book collectors will like this rare gem, as will anyone who has surfed in Japan. (March 2012).
