At some point a few years back, author and former Associate Editor of The Surfer’s Journal Christian Beamish decided it would be a good idea to get off the grid. He secured some plans for an 18-foot Shetland Isle sailing boat, and spent the next couple years building The Cormorant. Beamish’s new book, The Voyage of the Cormorant, chronicles his travels along the California, and Baja California, coastlines in this self-built boat. While 18-feet might sound like a good sized boat, make no mistake: it’s a small boat in a very unforgiving ocean. Fortunately, Beamish has some solid sailing skills and he manages to successfully navigate to all varieties of island and surf break. Along the way, he meets interesting and sometimes borderline depressing characters, but mostly Beamish is alone sailing or paddling his boat from spot to spot. The writing is excellent and the book engaging. This is a book that will appeal to surfers and sailors alike, and would be perfect companion on your own solo journeys.   (November 2012)
