From the author of Seabiscuit comes an amazingly written piece of WWII history. Cast adrift in a tiny raft after his damaged plane plunges into the Pacific, bombardier Louie Zamperini and two other soldiers drift hopelessly for weeks across thousands of barren nautical miles. Facing down starvation, the ever present sharks, 40 foot surf, and the occasional machine-gun attack from Japanese pilots, two of the survivors finally drift into Japanese controlled waters where they are captured. At this point, the journey really just begins. Zamperini’s true story of enduring the most horrific abuse from his Japanese captors is the stuff of legend. I won’t go into the details or the ultimate outcome, but what I will say is that you’ll find yourself turning the pages faster and faster as you pour through this story. Author Laura Hillenbrand has consummate skill as a storyteller, drawing the reader deeply into the feelings of both the soldiers and their jailers. If you enjoy easy reading WWII history like  In Harms Way, then you won’t be able to put down Unbroken. A WL Essential.  (March 2011)
