This is an excellent book that is loaded with rich facts, stories and imagery. The author, Ben Marcus, walks you through the complete history of the surfboard, from early wave-riding planks, to hollow kook boards, to failed experiments in foam, and finally to the vacuum-sealed, lightweight boards we use today. This book could have been a snore, but it reads really well and the pictures provide wonderful depth (so much so, in fact, that it works well on the coffee table if your wife will tolerate it in the living room).  Most important, The Surfboard does an excellent job of reminding surfers that they are linked to a long, historic wave-riding tradition that extends back beyond the origins of nearly every other sport played today.  (July 2008)
