WL Rating

I’ve read a lot of surfing books over the years but this is the only one I’ll carry with me on every surf trip. Written by three longtime surfing doctors, Surf Survival covers just about every conceivable surfing-related health issue. The book’s 16 chapters provide insight into things like the basic lessons of the sea, surfing injuries, nutrition, skin problems, surfer’s ear, vision issues, wilderness first aid, dangerous marine animals, surviving big surf, surf travel medicine, and how to manage infections on a surf trip.  What could have been a dry, textbook-like reading experience is actually quite interesting given the authors‘ penchant for offbeat humor and gory pictures (punctured tongue being a personal favorite). There is way more content in this book than you’d expect and it’s easily worth the $15 price tag. This is a great gift book for any level of surfer, and a must have for anyone who travels to find surf. Also a WL Essential. (September 2011)
