Review

WL Rating

I had already reviewed one Maverick’s book (Inside Maverick’s) when Matt Warshaw reminded me that he had written one too. Intuitively I knew that all of Warshaw’s books are good, but I didn’t know if I needed another Maverick’s book in my library. Turns out I did. While Inside Maverick’s did an excellent job providing a straight-up look into the heart of the break, Warshaw’s book takes a completely different approach to the topic. In Mavericks, Warshaw deftly tells the stories of both big wave surfing and Maverick’s, To accomplish this, he alternates chapters between the two themes, starting out in the 1950’s on the North Shore, and then moving into Maverick’s proper. While on the surface it sounds like an odd approach, it works quite well and it’s hard to put the book down. While Inside Maverick’s does a slightly better job of providing deep details into the break itself, Warshaw’s book is far and away the best big wave surfing history I’ve encountered. A great book for lover’s of surfing history and definitely a WL Essential.  (November 2010)
