Instant classic. Mandatory reading. Perfect gift. Those were the three phrases that leapt to mind when an early copy of Matt Warshaw’s The History of Surfing landed on my doorstep. Warshaw, the author of numerous surfing books including Maverick’s and The Encyclopedia of Surfing, is without a doubt the most knowledgeable man on the planet when it comes to surfing history. Now, there are loads of books covering surfing history so why does this one matter? Well, for starters, at 500 pages it’s the most comprehensive look at the sport ever. Second, the book provides more new information that it does old information. I can guarantee that unless you are a septuagenerian surfing historian, most of this book will be new and highly enlightening.  How is this book different from Warshaw’s other monster The Encyclopedia of Surfing? The History of Surfing is pure history, delving into the details around the longstanding evolution of our sport. That doesn’t mean it’s a dull, plodding read. On the contrary, you’ll be able to pick this one up, start a page, and then realize that an hour has passed.  Instant classic, mandatory reading, perfect gift, and a WL Essential. (August 2010)
