From renowned Australian author Tim Baker (Bustin’ Down the Door) comes High Surf, a book about the philosophy and wisdom accumulated by twenty or so of the world’s most influential surfers. For the book Baker interviewed/researched about twenty surfers ranging from well-known figures like the Duke, Kelly Slater, and Buffalo Keaulana, to more obscure folks like Vezen Wu, Peter Singer, and Pauline Menczer.  The book has a distinct Australian edge to it, and non-Aussies may have a hard time pushing through some of the chapters focused on Australian personalities. Frankly, I found myself skimming through more than one or two of these Oz-focused passages. For the surfers that you do care about, High Surf does provide some entertaining and interesting reading, but it’s probably not enough to justify buying a copy of the book.  (January 2011)
