I’m definitely a fan of Kelly Slater. It’s hard not to respect the man given his superhuman levels of focus, success and skill--not to mention an excellent record with the opposite sex. Even so, I thought this book was just OK. There are bits of For The Love that resonated with me. For starters, the quality and quantity of the photography is excellent and worthy of anyone’s coffee table. Second, the memory snippets from friends and colleagues like Jack Johnson are also revealing and at times entertaining. But, for me, while Kelly’s anecdotes were sometimes interesting, I always felt like he was holding back in much the same way it seemed that Michael Jordan kept his true feelings to himself. Perhaps this is just the way that dominant sports figures manage to exist and thrive in their special arena?  Perhaps. But I can’t help feeling that For The Love comes up short of the caliber Slater demonstrates in everything else he does.  (April 2009)
