Review

WL Rating

This book is exactly as advertised: The Encyclopedia of Surfing. It is a big, detailed and exhaustive book that chronicles just about every tidbit of surfing lore, fact and history. Former Surfer editor Matt Warshaw put an incredible amount of work into this book and the results are solid. In the Encyclopedia you’ll find detailed descriptions of wave parts, surfing media (movies, magazines, etc.), board types, surfing philosophy, trends toward localism, pioneers of surfing, sharks...and the list goes on. Despite the encyclopedia’s size it’s not your typical big shot, glossy photo type of book. The pictures are small and not the dramatic photos you’d get from some of Warshaw’s other books (Maverick’s). Even so, if you are interested in surfing it’s quite easy to lose yourself for hours on end with this book.  Definitely a WL Essential. (September 2009)
