I read this book more than 15 years ago after my father (a fisherman) gave it to me one holiday. It’s an unusual, but enjoyable, book that takes an odd approach to describing all things related to the bluefish.  The book is written in the form of contrived chats between a “stranger” and a “fisherman.” During the course of 12 fishing trips in the book, the two characters discuss bluefish mating habits, history, sea lore, ecology, Vineyard wind patterns, weather, etc. There’s quite a bit covered and I found the information interesting. Oddly, for a writer of Hersey’s calibre, the dialogue between the two can sometimes seem forced, but the basic stories and information kept me happily turning pages to the end.  This is a good book if you like to fish or have ever been East to hunt blues. And if you enjoy eating fish, you’ll also enjoy the recipes provided by the “fisherman” at the end of each chapter. (July 2008)
