This book is a collection of stories, all with a central theme of big wave riding. The book begins in the early days of big wave riding, moves into the Todos Santos years, covers the emergence of Maverick’s, and finally ends with the launching of tow-in surfing. Because the book has been around for nearly a decade, it sometimes feels a bit dated. Even so, most of the stories are timeless, providing good insight into the mental state of these men (yes, the stories are all about men) who are compelled to risk their lives surfing the world’s largest surf. As with almost any anthology, I find the bits with Greg Noll to be some of the best given his larger than life persona and adroit ability to succinctly tell an unvarnished story.  This is a really easy read and well suited to the beach.  (September 2008)
