Drew Kampion’s The Art of the Surfboard is part surfboard history, part Greg Noll biography, and part surfboard shaping DIY kit.  When I saw the title, it was right after I finished reading the Ben Marcus book The Surfboard..., and I was worried that it would simply be a rehash of the content in Marcus’ strong book. But Kampion’s book is different and definitely worth owning.  Kampion turns Noll’s long history as a rider/shaper into the motive power behind surfboard evolution. It’s a testament to Noll’s historic value to surfing that Kampion is able to pull off the approach, and I think it works really well. Chock full of great pictures and essay/stories from shaping’s founding fathers (Noll, Quigg, Velzy to name a few) The Art of the Surfboard is a solid book with great depth and style. Definitely a WL Essential. (October 2008)
